President’s Day Lesson Plans

President's Day Lessons

President’s Day is coming up, and starting on Monday, I am doing a two week unit on presidents! I will cover presidential research, biographical lessons, and generic learning about presidents. We did a lot of president occupation lessons around the election, but I’d love to bring it back in and reteach this during President’s Day time!  So this blog is all about the next two weeks and what I’ll be doing and my President’s Day lesson plans!

So, let me tell you about a FUN website I found while searching for lesson ideas today. My kids are going to go to our open library next week and do this individually on our mobile laptops!

Check out The Democracy Project at PBS Kids!

They go through the hours and tasks throughout a president’s day!

Another President’s Day activity I will be doing will tie their Word Work and phonics/spelling activities into it. One activity will be a Making Words FREEBIE that is at my TPT Store!

Another VALUABLE website is ReadWorks.

You do have to register for this, but it is FREE!

President’s Day 2016 Resources at ReadWorks!

Each of these resources is tiered towards grade level. K-2 has about three to four apiece, then 4th grade and on has five or more resources for each grade level.

Here is a sample. I clicked on ‘President’s Day,’ and I went to a reading passage (with Lexile level included).

The passage ALSO included comprehension questions, which is my number one focus in my second grade classroom!!

During my lesson planning, I am going to write all of these pieces into my literacy centers.

A craft will go in one center, books and printables into another. Then, flip flap facts into a third, and a reading center using these mini books and foldable books.

All of these pieces are included in my Presidents Day Unit.

And as my final activity for the week, we will be creating a flip book craft to finish up our Presidents Day unit. It includes a reading passage, comprehension questions, sorting activities, and a writing piece.
