Teaching grammar doesn’t have to be boring seat work… The capitalization activities I’ve outlined in this blog post can be both engaging and exciting for your students. From team races to magic wands, find creative ways to practice capitalization skills. Throughout the blog post, you’ll see a couple of affiliate links to Amazon.
Capitalization is a Common Core standard that is taught in every grade, progressively getting harder. Here’s a peek at the expectations for each grade:
- Kindergartners- first word in a sentence and the pronoun ‘I’
- 1st Graders- dates and names of people
- 2nd Graders- holidays, product names, geographic names
- 3rd Graders- titles and products
- 4th Graders- all capitalization rules
Chart Paper and Anchor Chart Idea

Have lots of sticky notes around the classroom? Use them for corrections! When introducing your students to capitalization, a fun whole group activity is to write incorrect sentences on your white board or a piece of chart paper. Select one student randomly at a time to replace the mistake with a sticky note correction. Do this daily during your Capitalization unit so that each student gets a turn to correct the sentence!

Popsicle Sticks Mistakes

Do you have any popsicle sticks shoved in the back of your teacher cabinet? Grab several and write incomplete sentences on each stick. Place them in a basket for students to grab one at a time and rewrite correctly in a notebook or a recording sheet. Simple and easy to reuse often for capitalization activities.
Materials you may need:
Magic Capitalization Wand

Make a Magic Wand with materials lying around your classroom. Use a ruler, tape, and cardstock to create your wand. Add the capitalization editing symbol to the magic wand. Then, throughout your unit, you can write incorrect capitals on the board or chart paper. Students can “edit” your work with the magic wand! This also ties in the editing writing standard for your students.
Digital Practice Activities

Have laptops, desktops, or tablets in your classroom? Add these digital activities and capitalization games to your centers or small groups. The activities are easy to understand, clean design, and standards-based!
Whole Group Team Capitalization Races

Form two lines of students and place a basket in the front of the classroom. Add index cards with incorrectly written names, places, holidays, and product names. The student in the front of the line will walk to the basket, grab a card, and write it correctly on the board. Then, the next person in will repeat until the basket is empty!

Center for Hands-On Capitalization Activities

The great thing about grammar centers is that once you teach the content explicitly, you can add the centers into their rotation throughout the year. This will help them spiral review their skills and keep the content fresh in their minds. Check out the links below to add centers similar to the ones above to your classroom!
