American Symbols Anchor Chart

Anchor charts are always a great way to focus in on a mini lesson before teaching any content (science or social studies). If you introduce what an American symbol is with an anchor chart, students will understand vocabulary prior to the unit. You can create anchor charts for American symbols in general, and you can even make them for each individual American symbol.

Reading Passage

Here is a passage with text-dependent questions. Have students highlight their answers in the text and restate their questions! This will help them learn all about the American symbol, then they can practice comprehension skills. There are twelve passages for each of the American symbols covered in the set.

Flip Book Activity

And for fun… time for a flip book!! Each of the American symbols in the unit gets a flip book. You lift the flap for each “symbol…”, “appearance”, “importance”, and “cool fact” tab and write 1-2 sentence under each.

Here is a peek at working with this unit:

Mini book with FACTS

Mini books are a great way to teach bullets and fact writing. I always tell my students when we use bullets we can minimally write our thoughts and phrases instead of using full sentences.
