Writing Traits: IDEAS

Writing traits: Ideas

We are spending the month of September on the Writing trait, IDEA.

During a summer P.D., we were given a 6 Traits of writing book and a rough idea of how to sketch out our year. My second grade classroom started this week, and we love thinking of ideas!

Trait 1:

IDEAS!! The first focus lesson for ideas is based on a story called Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge. The story is about a little boy who brings significant artifacts from his house to trigger the memory of a woman who lost her thoughts.

The assignment that I sent them home for the writing trait, ideas, was to get something of importance to them and bring it in to share and write about. Here are the students practicing their speaking and presenting voices:

After their presentations that required them to speak about their special items and form sentences about these, I asked them to write about them. It was a free write, just steered in the direction of “what ideas do you get from this?” Can you write a lot about this? Is it easy to write about something you care about? Is it easier to write about something you have lots of information on?

THEN…an author from Kentucky came in and brought her puppies. Pictured below is Leigh Anne Florence, and she is a Kentucky based author that writes about her two pet dogs, Woody and Chloe.

Her books are great! We love them in our classroom! Check her out! She visited our school today with her dogs (pictured but hard to see in her arms,) and she taught a fabulous lesson on writing with ideas. It tied in wonderfully with our writing lessons for the week.
