This standards-based measurement unit focuses on the Common Core math standards 2.MD.8. This asks students to tell solve money word problems under $1, counting like coins and mixed coins. There are daily lesson plans, whole group activities, partner practice activities, MATH group centers, exit slips, and assessments.
What’s included in the 5 daily lesson plans:
- Whole group activity
- Partner practice activity
- MATH group: Math writing, Apply new skills, Teacher time, Hands-on math (Teacher time is differentiated learning opportunities for remediation, on-level, and enrichment.)
- Exit slip
–Day 1- Counting Like-Coins
–Day 2- Counting Mixed Coins
–Day 3- Counting Coins Word Problems
–Day 4- Spending Money Word Problems
–Day 5- Mixed Word Problems
Solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies, using $ and ¢ symbols appropriately. Example: If you have 2 dimes and 3 pennies, how many cents do you have?
The 2.MD.8 activities that are included in my short answer, centers, printables, and interactive notebooks are similar, but have all been changed to fit these lesson plans. The short answers have different prompts and are now part of MATH groups, the printables & interactive notebooks have been updated and are used during the ‘Apply new skills’ part of MATH groups.
