2.NBT.5 Bonus- How to Regroup in Addition and Subtraction Problems

Total Pages: 90
File Size: 3 MB

This standards-based place value unit focuses on the Common Core math standards 2.NBT.5. This is a BONUS unit because my 2.NBT.5 Strategies unit is already uploaded in my store, but I decided we needed to take a step back and create a unit to accompany it that teaches HOW to teach regrouping in addition and subtraction. This bonus unit asks students to regroup when adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers fluently, using place value strategies. They will work with base-ten models and the standard algorithm.

**This bonus unit can be used before, during, or after the accompany set. It all depends on how you feel your students understand regrouping.**

2.NBT.5 Main Unit <

There are daily lesson plans, whole group activities, partner practice activities, MATH group centers, exit slips, and assessments.

What’s included in the 3 daily lesson plans:

  • Whole group activity
  • Partner practice activity
  • MATH group: Math writing, Apply new skills, Teacher time, Hands-on math (Teacher time is differentiated learning opportunities for remediation, on-level, and enrichment.)
  • Exit slip

2.NBT.5 Bonus Focus:
-First Day- Strategy: Base-Ten Blocks and Regrouping
-Second Day- Strategy: Addition Standard Algorithm
-Third Day- Strategy: Subtraction Standard Algorithm

Fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.

The 2.NBT.5 activities that are included in my short answer, centers, printables, and interactive notebooks are similar, but have all been changed to fit these lesson plans. The short answers have different prompts and are now part of MATH groups, the printables & interactive notebooks have been updated and are used during the ‘Apply new skills’ part of MATH groups.
